Airborne wind energy systems consist of kites or tethered drones that generate power by capturing
high-altitude winds with very low material input. They provide several important benefits for the
European energy transition and the industrial transformation. The sector is now at the brink of
commercialization. The recent inclusion of airborne wind energy in the German Renewable Energy Act
(EEG) has been a key milestone. However, to unlock the technology’s full-potential and speeding up
deployment, further political support with regards to funding and permitting acceleration is required.
