1        About SkySails

As a leading member of Airborne Wind Europe, SkySails, is a company deeply committed to push the boundaries of Airborne Wind Energy. Based in Northern Germany, SkySails is landing at WindEnergy Hamburg as a pivotal player in introducing and advancing the AWE field within the German territory.

Among the latest milestones and achievements, are its successful validation of the world’s first performance curve for Airborne Wind Energy, solidifying its position as the pioneer in harnessing the potential of this innovative technology and also, the inclusion of AWE in Germany’s Renewable Energy Law (EEG). It marks a significant step for the industry, unlocking new opportunities for innovation and sustainability, with a specific tariff for AWE of around 11 euro cents per kWh. Although this tariff is too low to cover current costs, it is an important and groundbreaking step globally.

On the one hand, this will significantly reduce the market risk for investments in German and European high-tech companies. Secondly, this key milestone has created a decisive precondition for Airborne Wind Energy to make an important contribution to the energy transition. It shows that the technology´s relevance is now truly recognized by policy makers.

SkySails journey began with a simple but powerful idea: harness the energy of high-altitude winds using large kites. This vision, driven by the passion and expertise of its founder, Stephan Wrage, and the entire SkySails team, has since evolved into a revolutionary technology that is ready to play a significant role in the global transition towards a greener future.

Precisely, SkySails’ operations are located in Hamburg, where they have the company’s headquarters and kite workshop and, by coincidence, where the WindEnergy Hamburg will take place in September. There, a dedicated team of engineers, sailmakers, mechanics, software developers, and project engineers work to design, develop, and optimize AWE systems. From the kite design to the assembly of ground stations, every aspect of SkySails’ technology is meticulously crafted to deliver reliable and efficient energy solutions.

2        Global Impact: SkySails in Mauritius

SkySails’ innovative approach to wind energy has already made its debut on the global stage. A prime example of this is the company’s project in the Republic of Mauritius, where SkySails has partnered with IBL Energy Holdings Ltd the installation of an AWE system connected directly to the grid. This project, supported by the Mauritius Renewable Energy Agency (MARENA), the Central Electricity Board (CEB), and the Mauritius Research Council (MRC), marks a significant milestone in the deployment of AWE technology in the Southern Hemisphere. The large kite-based system harnesses high-altitude winds off the eastern coast of Mauritius, contributing to the country’s ambitious goal of achieving a 40% share of renewables in its electricity mix by 2030.

The success of this pilot project not only underscores the viability of AWE technology but also highlights its potential to revolutionise energy production in regions with huge and untapped wind resources.
