The energy transition took a major step forward with the successful presentation of the EKEleVate research project at the Energy Transition Laboratory in Ketzin, Brandenburg/ Germany. The project, carried out by Airborne Wind Europe´s member and AWE system developer EnerKíte, in collaboration with e.disnatur and several consortium partners from the energy industry and academia in Germany, introduced the public to AWE as a game-changing solution towards a greener future.

This event, part of an initiative funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection of Germany with 1.9 million euros, attracted more than 50 people among which were local residents, industry experts, and renewable energy enthusiasts. AWEU Central Network Manager Stefanie Thoms and Helena Schmidt, TU Delft PhD candidate, were there supporting the event and also representing the EU Horizon sister project JustWind4All, providing latest updates on the social acceptance research status that surrounds the technology. AWE looks now for expanding the range of systems available for wind energy generation, offering a complementary, efficient and versatile technology for the future energy system.

Over the next few years, until mid-2027, EnerKíte will undergo testing at the Ketzin site. During this period, engineers and researchers will evaluate its performance, reliability, and social acceptance as a grid-connected system. The information, e.g. about its market status provided during the event, allowed attendees to engage directly with project developers, gain insights into the technology, and discuss the broader implications for local energy supply and sustainability.

EnerKíte and e.disnatur representatives ensured that the public would keep transparency throughout the project’s lifetime, offering regular updates on progress and key findings. The open dialogue created a lively atmosphere, with many community members willing to contribute their thoughts and concerns regarding the future of wind energy.

Florian Breipohl, CEO of EnerKíte

This event marks an important milestone towards more sustainable energy solutions and a just energy transition. As AWE kicks-off its testing phase on site, the public and stakeholders are looking forward to seeing how this cutting-edge technology will impact the renewable energy landscape in Brandenburg and beyond.

The EKEleVate project promises not only technological advancements but also the potential for greater energy independence and environmental benefits. As testing progresses, the results will provide key insights that could shape the future of wind energy generation in the region and globally.
