On Tuesday, October 1st, at 12:30 CET, Volkan Salma successfully defended his PhD thesis titled “Safety and Reliability of Commercial Airborne Wind Energy Systems” at the TU Delft Aula. His research explores critical safety measures, essential reliability protocols, and the way forward to the airworthiness certification for the large-scale deployment of AWE systems.

The defense ceremony was marked by notable moments, including when Prof. Gerard van Bussel conferred the doctoral certificate to Volkan in recognition of his successful work. In addition, Prof. Roland Schmehl, a prominent figure in the field of Airborne Wind Energy, being also the co-founder of Airborne Wind Europe´s member Kitepower, delivered a laudatory speech (laudatio), highlighting Volkan’s contributions and the importance of his findings for the industry’s future.
