As part of Flying Solo: Committing to Wind Energy, a unique public exhibition by TU Delft, AWE takes center stage in the story of wind innovation, from historic Dutch conventional wind to next-generation kite-powered systems.
Installed both on Tram 1, connecting Delft and Scheveningen, and in the TU Delft Library, Flying Solo brings wind energy research out of the lab and into the streets. The exhibition illustrates how the Netherlands continues to lead global wind innovation, with AWE systems representing the next step in harnessing the power of the wind.

At the heart of this initiative is Dr. Roland Schmehl, associate professor at TU Delft and head of the pioneering Airborne Wind Energy research group. For its part, Kitepower is focusing on commercial deployment.

Flying Solo highlights the evolution of wind, past, present, and future. It traces the path from historic traditional wind to offshore, and now to AWE systems. By featuring AWE alongside iconic Dutch wind heritage and artistic installations like Theo Jansen’s Strandbeest, the exhibition bridges science, culture, and imagination.

The journey will culminate in December with a public discussion panel, “Committing to Wind Energy,” bringing together experts in offshore, AWE, and sustainable wind technologies to discuss what it truly means to commit to wind, technologically, socially, and environmentally.
