9TH EDITION OF AIRBORNE WIND CONFERENCE CLOSES TO GREAT ACCLAIM

Nearly 200 industry professionals gather in Milan to discuss market trends and technological developments

The 9th edition of the Airborne Wind Energy Conference (AWEC) closed on Friday 24th in Milan and saw 180 key actors gather to debate challenges and opportunities in the pursuit of the launch of further airborne technologies.

Many delegates were greatly enthused to attend an in-person event again and feedback was very positive on a programme covering business development, techno-economic studies, innovations in materials and production processes.

The conference covered a wide-ranging exploration of topics with a tight focus on innovation. It was pleasing to see such a collaborative spirit among the delegates” said Jon Gjerde, cofounder of Kitemill and Chair of the Board of Airborne Wind Europe. “The action-oriented sessions were both innovatively produced and highly engaging, allowing for dynamic sharing and debating within a really insightful group of leaders.”

I am very encouraged by this event, seeing that the Airborne Wind Energy sector continues to have highly motivated and enthusiastic people, showing progress in both R&D and towards commercialisation of AWE systems.” said Kristian Petrick, Secretary-General of Airborne Wind Europe. “While some companies had to give up since the last AWEC three years ago, others have grown and new ones have entered the field. This AWEC has confirmed that the sector has reached a crucial point where public and private support – notably in the form of more, ideally joint demonstration sites in Europe and abroad – is needed to start deploying AWE technology. After this event I’m even more confident that our companies and research institutes will deliver. Thanks to all who attended and contributed!
